Can I rely on GPS to follow Route 66?

Partly. Why apps pull you onto the interstate and how waypoints, offline maps and paper notes keep you on the old road.

Partly. GPS apps will happily route you onto the interstate because it’s faster. To stay on the old road, you need to steer the app or use other tools alongside it.

Why GPS struggles

Route 66 isn’t one continuous numbered road anymore. It’s a chain of local streets, frontage roads and county routes with different names. Navigation apps don’t know which ones are historic.

What works

  • Add waypoints in each town so the app has to follow the old line
  • Choose settings that avoid highways where possible
  • Download offline maps for the desert stretches, where signal drops
  • Carry printed turn notes or a paper road atlas as backup
  • Watch for brown historic route signs, but don’t rely on them alone

A good habit

Brief each leg the night before. Know the next three turns and where the road rejoins the interstate. A passenger with the notes makes the day much easier.

Segment-by-segment notes are on the route by state page.
